250 marks · 3 hours · 2 essays (from given topics) of approximately 1000–1200 words each
No fixed syllabus. Essay topics span: Philosophy & Ethics, Society & Culture, India & World, Science & Technology, Economy & Environment. UPSC evaluates coherence, depth of thought, structure, and command over English or Hindi.
Optional: 2 papers × 250 marks = 500 marks. Total Mains written = 1750 marks. Interview = 275 marks. Grand Total = 2025 marks.

No single "best" optional exists — it depends on your background and interest. Popular optionals with high average scores include Anthropology, PSIR, Sociology, Geography, and Public Administration. For science graduates, Mathematics and Physics can be very scoring if prepared well.
NCERTs (Class 6–12) are the foundation, not the ceiling. They're enough to build the base for History, Geography, Polity, Economy, and Science.
